SNAKE XL
VIOLA PINEIDER 2025
The same fragments that elsewhere adorn and wrap the body here move away from it. Snake takes up the form of the serpent that recurs in Viola Pineider’s work and stretches its line past two metres, to a scale that belongs to space rather than to a person.
The segments come from reclaimed wood, from the residues gathered in the atelier, mounted one onto the next into a continuous articulation and run through by three silver inserts. The line that takes shape changes direction, rises and falls back, without ever settling into a defined profile.
What was ornament on the body becomes a presence in space. The gesture it came from remains, encircling and following a form, while what was a residue turns back into living matter and takes its place in the room.
